Global temperature has not risen for about a decade though it is 0.8 degrees Celsius warmer than in 1900 and about the same level above the probable average global ,temperaturte since the end of the last ice age. Just over half a degree Celsius of this rise in temperature occurred between 1976 and 1998.
However global temperatures are likely to surge in the next few years according to the Met Office and will be 3 degrees Celsius above the present level by 2055 if there is a business as usual situation over the next few decades.
To prevent dangerous climate change it is probably necessary to stabilise greenhouse gas emissions not much above their present level and then they need to fall. If this does not happen humanity willbe largely wiped out.
A carbon price of about £100 per tonnee of carbon is probably necessary to really force down emissions. This is not high enough to cause a total stop to emissions but is enough to force it to be used sparingly and only for essentials.
A £100 per tonne of carbon wil lbe a useful start to cutting carbon emissions.
