The global emissions of CO2 have DECLINED significantly for the first time since the great war.  The amount of goods traded around the world has declined significantly also and so have diminished the money earned by people producing those goods. And so have the fortunes of all the countries of this globe. But this is just the economic fortunes - For the Environmental Fortunes have advanced. This is the year that will see the far reaching Copenhagen agreements and the birth of the Green Jobs economy.  As governments rush to shore up their faltering economies by investing and bailing out the wealthy banks.... there is the prevailing idea that it is a luxury to invest in environmental improvements. But that shoring up and investing in the wealthiest institutions of the societies and ensuring the wanker-banker bonuses is seen as a Government Policy necessity? Judging by the stimulus packages, of the UK administration of the ex-Chancellor and long term banker friend, present PM Gordon Brown as well as of the similar policies of the EU major countries and even of the Obama administration; all are thinking that it is a necessity. The final bill for this unnecessary necessity is far more than the combined debt of countries who suffered and fought the second world war. That's what it costs to save the wanker-bankers... and keep them in caviar and champagne with mansion sized bonuses to boot. After the largesse towards the TARP institutions in the US and the save the bankers collection plate, there is a little left over money for the environment. This bit includes almost $90 billion for things like retrofitting old buildings to be more energy efficient, energy generation from renewables and building new high-speed train lines. But in the heart of the plan is unemployment reduction. If CO2 reductions also lead to unemployment reductions -- so much the better. Thus utilizing the present dangers and using the birth of the Green Economy as the way to redemption of the highest unemployment crisis, since the Great Depression and beyond, is the smartest Economic Policy move of the Obama Administration. Using Public Policy to utilize the Government stimulus capital to create green jobs is an innovation in itself. After all a great government policy plan is all about logistics...Here the rhetoric is lacking but the logistical leadership speaks volumes in the right direction. The US Administration plan is to create at least five million "green" jobs by using the stimulus, by the end of year 2010. This is another version of the benefits of the Environmental Parliament 10x10 Campaign. The creation of five million US Green jobs by the end of 2010, to replace those jobs lost in manufacturing and elsewhere in society is the greatest government policy initiative we have seen for the benefit of the society as a whole. Multi-stakeholder efforts to create the kind of jobs the people can easily train for and make a good living at it along with entrepreneurial focus is a real godsend. To retrain automotive workers and industrial employees as well as service people from their old jobs towards becoming green is no mean feat. But if you are a low skilled and even unskilled young worker, there is a good green job for you too. You can easily become an installer of solar panels, or building retrofitter, or insulation installer, or a double glazed window installer or even a collector and sorter at the local recycling plant. That's leadership fro the US. And it is exactly now the kind of Government policy needed in the UK. The same is needed in Europe and the developed as well as in the developing world and hopefully the rest of the planet. Because what the entire globe needs, now are all manner of new Green Jobs. A global green new deal to lower fossil-fuel dependence and energy costs as well as create new jobs, among other things is our need and the goal of Government Policy in all Enlightened leadership governments globally. Ultimately, the goal should be to expedite economic recovery, alleviate poverty and lay the foundation for a sustainable economy. That way we might rebound from an economic crisis, by avoiding the onslaught of the environmental coming crises. Let's use the combined Crises of energy insecurity, water scarcity and, of course, climate change as dramatic once in a Lifetime Opportunities for the creation and the growth of a new Green Jobs Economy. Let us pray think and create public government Policy visionary and strong enough for the creation of a green Jobs growth economy.
